Bilayer Coherent and Quantum Hall Phases: Duality and Quantum Disorder
We consider a fully spin-polarized quantum Hall system with no interlayer
tunneling at total filling factor (where is an odd integer) using
the Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau theory. Exploiting particle-vortex duality and
the concept of quantum disordering, we find a large number of possible
compressible and incompressible ground states, some of which may have relevance
to recent experiments of Spielman {\it et.al.}. We find interlayer coherent
compressible states without Hall quantization and interlayer-incoherent
incompressible with Hall quantization in addition to the usual
Halperin states, which are both interlayer-coherent and incompressible
Example of a Multi-Media Courseware Built by an Interdisciplinary Team
Virtually everyone recognizes the situations where a decision made on short-term financial rationale has resulted in higher long-term financial costs, whereas, appropriate technical, safety, and financial considerations would have avoided the waste and served everyone better. The key is to somehow get more of the right information to decision makers in a manner that allows them to consider the ripple effects that one decision has on another (Shana, 1998). Balanced management is a key to success where decisions are made such that financial goals, technical needs, and safety factors and credibility issues are simultaneously considered and weighed. This balance expresses the desires of every stakeholder in the industry and, when it is achieved, everyone wins. Therefore, the first goal of this project is to bring real-world decision making from industry into the classrooms so that every student in the class can apply their classroom learning to understand and train in making decisions. We chose a case study method of instruction to achieve this goal
Special Issue on the AMCIS 2001 Workshops: Bringing Real-World Issues into Classrooms: A Multi-Media Case Study Approach
This paper presents the results of research studies that use innovative educational materials to teach business and engineering courses. The innovation was part of a National Science Foundation grant to develop multimedia case studies that include photos, videos, and textual materials that bring real-world issues to the classroom. When these case studies were used in the classrooms, the students assumed roles of the managers and technical personnel discussed in the case and defended the position assigned to them. During this process, students are expected to integrate business skills with technical knowledge, enhance their decision-making skills, use principles of risk and cost management to solve problems, and enhance teamwork. Evaluation of the use of these materials in undergraduate classrooms shows that the students perceive enhanced opportunities for active learning and improvement of their higher-level cognitive skills. In addition, these case studies were shown to stimulate interest in non-engineering, female, and minority students about engineering and technical topics. The article is based on a workshop at the Americas Conference on Information Systems 2001 in Boston
CHANGES IN IT STRATEGIES AS A RESULT OF GLOBALIZATION IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY: A CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
Co-Creating Value: Student Contributions to Smart Cities
Given the interdependence of the public and private sectors and simultaneous and massive impact of widespread disasters on the entire community, this paper investigates the use of information technologies, specifically geospatial information systems, within the multi-organizational community to effectively co-create value during disaster response and recovery efforts. We present and examine in depth a participatory action research project in a disaster-experienced coastal community conducted during the 2006-2014 time period. The results of the action research project and analysis of a survey completed by stakeholders leads to a list of findings, in particular those related to developing a model of next generation learning design where students are co-creators of value to the smart cities
